A Beautiful Vintage IWC Gold Dress Watch with Applied Gold Dial Furniture, Powered by the Famous IWC Cal.89 Workhorse, c.1959

The Schaffhausen brand introduced the Cal.89 in 1946 and produced it for over 30 years until 1979. The movement came as an innovative central-seconds three-hander, with hacking seconds. Cal.89 originated from Cal.83, the famous movement housed inside so many military watches of WWII (Mark X).

And IWC dress watches based on the Calibre 89 are pivotal because they are essentially a wolf in sheep's clothing - a rather pretty-looking watch with an unnecessarily tough movement - in fact, it houses the same movement as the IWC Dirty Dozen watch! Who'd have thought this charming 9k gold dress watch with its elegant styling and beautifully opulent dial, would pack a punch like that? 

The ivory dial does have some slight pitting in the centre, but one would have to really inspect the watch to see this, it is otherwise in very good shape. A simple dial design boasts stylish Dauphine hands and applied hour markers. It is marked Swiss at 6 o'clock and has the full IWC signature at 12. The dial is encapsulated underneath shatterproof Plexiglas which is, in turn, encased in 18k gold. The case is also in good shape, the gold-plated crown does show a little wear but nothing of concern. This is a mid-size watch at 34mm but it does wear large on the wrist due to its slimline bezel and simple dial design. Paired with a beautiful leather strap, this watch exudes class and wears beautifully.
