A VERY Rare Omega Flightmaster 'Prototype' with Flightmaster dial and Railmaster case and movement  (Model Ref: 2914-2 SC)- c.1958

Before Omega released the bold, multi-crown Flightmaster of 1969, the brand experimented with aviation-oriented tool watches, exploring designs that bridged their professional families. This ultra-rare Omega Ref. 2914-2 SC appears to be one such early “flight-focused” prototype, built on Railmaster architecture but fitted with a Flightmaster-signed dial. With several similar examples traced to Denmark, collectors increasingly believe these pieces represent Omega’s exploratory steps toward a dedicated pilot’s watch—making this an exceptionally intriguing discovery.

What's on Offer

This is one of the most intriguing Omegas we have ever handled—a watch that sits firmly in the realm of early experimentation and remains shrouded in mystery. At its core, the watch is structurally a Railmaster 2914-2 SC, complete with the correct Calibre 284 (17j) movement and a case-back bearing only the hippocampus—no Railmaster or Flightmaster text anywhere. Yet the dial is unmistakably signed “Flightmaster”, written in the elegant early script seen nowhere else in the Omega catalogue of the period.

There are only three known examples with the unique case back, Flightmaster dial and Omega logo on the lug all delivered to Denmark before the FAP Flightmaster Watches. This lug engraving is especially notable; it does not appear on any known production Omega of the era, supporting the theory that these pieces were prototype or experimental builds, potentially assembled for evaluation by military aviation units.

The dial itself has aged to a wonderfully atmospheric speckled patina—deep, even, and completely honest. The broad arrow hour hand and dagger minute hand remain original, as does the tall “Flightmaster” script. Housed in the robust anti-magnetic 2914 case, it feels every bit the tool watch it appears to have been intended to be.

Given the matching characteristics of the other Denmark-found examples, its Railmaster foundation, the aviation-oriented dial naming, its pre-1969 dating, and its unusual case markings, this watch sits in a rare and compelling category: likely pre-production or small-batch Omega experimentation, bridging the Railmaster’s technical DNA with the eventual Flightmaster’s conceptual purpose.

A true collector’s piece for those who appreciate early Omega anomalies, prototype history, and the thrill of owning something that simply should not exist—yet does. It's what the boss would call - 'rare as hens teeth'. Make of that what you will.
