c.1910s - La Garde - Large Plated Metal - WW1 Trench Watch - 'Jumbo' Hinged Case

Stunning trench watch with brass crown, red '12', metallic dial, blue steel hands, signed 'La Garde' - 38mm case.

One of the finest trench watches we've come across recently, this La Garde wears more like a modern dress watch than a 1910s Swiss import piece for WWI soldiers. The trench watch is so named due to its common usage by British forces as an officer's watch for the battlefield. Several features of its design were fundamental to its functionality: the red '12' to easily align the eye with the time when glancing, the small seconds dial to have a separate register to coordinate seconds when timing events. The dial has a beautiful, minimal design, which thanks to the larger case construction and near-perfect preservation (small hairline crack to dial between 10 and 11), has all of the vintage style and barely any of the bumps or scratches to show for it.

What's on offer

A large (38mm!) circa.1910s trench watch with its instantly recognisable red '12' and sub-seconds dial at 6. Made of white metal possibly silver, but not hallmarked. Featuring a porcelain dial, this La Garde is in stunning condition considering its grand old age! The case is fantastically preserved, having clearly been preciously worn and cared for by its previous owner! The watch will have just had a service by our watchmaker so should run perfectly well and keep good time!
