The Schwob brothers named the company cyma, a Latin word meaning "sprout", and the origin of the French "cime" or summit. In the early years, the company had a staff of 40 people and 55 machines that together produced about 40 watches a day. However, it was not until 1892 in when the brothers partnered with Frédéric Henri Sandoz, the owner of the watch wholesale company, Henri Sandoz et Cie, that the business expanded. Under Sandoz's leadership, the company became the Cyma Watch Company and built the Cyma factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in the Jura Mountains, near Le Locle. Both towns had been the center of the Swiss watchmaking industry during the 19th century.
What’s On Offer
This beautiful vintage gold dress watch offers a captivating and nostalgic nod to Art Deco with its bold, structured design. Comprising all that the movement embodies - craftsmanship, rich materials and ornament - this watch wears beautifully on the wrist, the gold case and bezel showcasing the ivory dial with Breguet-style Arabic numerals perfectly. There is a central chapter ring which mimics the tank-shaped case and inset there is a recessed seconds counter - very much in keeping with the geometric qualities of Art Deco. Blued steel hands complete the dial which is encapsulated underneath mineral crystal and encased in 9k gold. The midcase has a beautiful 'wheatsheaf' ribbon engraving offering extra elegance from the side profile of the watch.
Having closely inspected the hallmarks on the inside case back, we can confidently say that this watch was imported into the UK by 'GS', which denotes Stockwell & Company, a British Assay Agent who were founded after a British law change in 1907 required all imported precious metal wristwatches to receive British hallmarks upon arrival.
A mid-size watch with elegant lines, this is a charming vintage piece that will no doubt bring the wearer much joy for years to come.
