Trench watches were developed during World War I as a response to the impracticality of pocket watches in combat. Soldiers needed quick, hands-free access to time, leading to the adaptation of pocket watches with leather straps. Manufacturers soon produced purpose-built wristwatches featuring wire lugs, luminous dials, and protective guards. These “trench watches” proved essential for coordinating military operations. Before the war, wristwatches were seen as feminine; by the war’s end, they had become widely accepted by men. The trench watch marked a key turning point, helping establish the wristwatch as a standard accessory in daily life.

What's on offer

This exceptional c.1917 manual-wind trench watch is a remarkable example of early wristwatch design, produced during the height of World War 1 when timekeeping became an essential tool for soldiers in the field. Encased in solid silver, this piece reflects the utilitarian elegance of the era, combining durability with refined craftsmanship.

The white enamel dial is beautifully preserved, featuring clear white Arabic numerals and classic cathedral hands—both characteristic of early 20th-century military timepieces. A small seconds subdial sits at the 6 o'clock position, offering both function and balance. The black adjustable Bund strap provides a comfortable fit and pays homage to the original military style, adding further authenticity to its historical appeal.

Despite being over 100 years old, the watch remains in superb condition with minimal signs of age. The case retains its sharp lines, and the dial is fairly well-preserved, given its age.

This watch is not only a functional timepiece but also a significant artifact from the transitional period between pocket and wristwatches. A perfect addition to any vintage or military collection, it’s a rare opportunity to own a piece of horological and wartime history.
