Vertex - W.W.W. - Dirty Dozen World War II Military Wristwatch - c.1944
A Superb Example Of The Vertex Dirty Dozen Military Issued Watch In Original Condition With Attractive Original Lume
As fighting on both the WWII Eastern and Western fronts showed signs of turning in the Allies' favour, many members of the British armed forces were issued with a basic but carefully specified watch, commissioned from 12 Swiss manufacturers by the British Ministry of Defence (MoD). These were ultimately to replace the earlier issued 'ATP' series watches from earlier in the war, and have become even more collectable and desirable than this already beloved collection, thanks to their larger and more sturdy manufacture.
Though there are some slight differences between the dozen, they were produced to tight specifications- designed to be waterproof, have fixed lug bars, numbers and indices, a matte black dial with luminescent hands (originally made of Radium, later replaced by the MoD with less radioactive Tritium) and an extremely accurate and reliable movement, manually wound.
What's on offer
A beautiful example of the Vertex Dirty Dozen, in wonderful original condition. The original stark black dial boasts bold Arabic numerals, an outer minute track and a recessed seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock. The hour plots boast their original lume which has aged to a stunning vanilla colour and corresponds perfectly with the lume on the original syringe hands.
The chrome-topped case looks well and although you can see some wear, this only adds to the character and is to be expected with a military tool watch of this age. The watch is mid-sized at 35mm, but wears very nicely on the wrist and is very comfortable. Whether you are an avid military collector or simply looking for a beautiful vintage tool watch that is still very much wearable, this is a great watch and enjoys the added benefit of being steeped in history and becoming more and more collectable as the years go by.
