Imagine finding out something amazing that your grandparent did and then emulating it three-quarters of a century later. That is exactly what Vertex Watches have done. The owner’s grandfather originally founded Vertex Watches in 1900 which closed its doors in the early 1970s, and he wanted to bring them back with a modern twist. Don Cochrane is the great-grandson of Claude Lyons, Vertex’s late founder, and he has revived the company’s name and introduced its first watch since 1972.
During World War 2, Vertex was selected as one of twelve watch companies who were selected to produce specialist watches to specific military specifications for military use (later known as the Dirty Dozen). Several thousand of the original watches were made and issued throughout the military but only a few still remain today, and they are highly sought after by both watch and military collectors.
In essence, the M100 is a higher-end re-imagination of the original Vertex watch.
What’s On Offer
The Vertex M100A has a 40-millimetre 316L stainless steel case, much larger than the 1940s version at 35mm. It also boasts a double-curved anti-reflective sapphire crystal instead of acrylic and offers 100 meters of water resistance. Inside is a custom automatic Swiss movement with Vertex’s Cal.59 ratchet weight engraved with "VERTEX" just like the movement found in many of the company’s older watches.
The watch bears an obvious resemblance to the WWW watch with the stark black dial, oversized sub-seconds dial, white outer minute track, and syringe hands, however, the painted Arabic numerals have been replaced with blocks of moulded SuperLuminova for super visibility in low light.
This watch is a 2022 edition and barely worn, it is supplied with its original box and paperwork, a black leather strap and an Admiralty grey NATO strap - we would consider it to be in pretty much mint condition. For those that love the idea of the original WWW watch but prefer the modern tweaks, this would tick the box for sure.
