An Absolutely Stunning 1966 'Paul Newman' Reference 6239, Rolex Cosmograph Daytona With Immaculate Silver Panda Sunburst Dial. Only One Very Careful Previous Owner, Comes Complete with a period Correct Rolex Box Some Paperwork and the Original Purchase Receipt from When Purchased New in 1969.

You know you've made it when a Rolex reference is nicknamed after you. The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, especially those of the ‘Paul Newman’ variety, are some of the most sought-after vintage watches on the market. A star of both the silver screen and racing track, Newman was a forceful celebrity for much of the 20th  and the beginning of the 21st century. The actor was gifted his Daytona 6239 by his wife in 1968 and became the watch he was famous for wearing throughout his time as an actor in the 1970s and 1980s.

The original watch belonging to Newman was eventually sold at auction in 2017 for a record price tag of almost eighteen million US Dollars! Not bad for a sports chronograph that initially retailed for around 200 dollars. It's little wonder then, that these watches are rarely offered for sale, and when they are, they command strong money depending on condition, originality, and dial variants.

We are very pleased to be able to offer this beautiful and much sought-after one-owner watch for sale, but if you want it, be quick - a watch with this history and in this stunning and original condition will not be around for long!

What’s On Offer

We are incredibly lucky to be able to offer this particular watch for sale as it is extremely rare to find one in such beautiful and original condition and accompanied by an original vintage period correct Rolex box and importantly the original purchase receipt! Unfortunately, the original box and booklets along with the warranty paperwork were taken from the original owner's home in a burglary some years ago, but the watch and surviving papers that we now have luckily were kept elsewhere.

The watch has been treasured by its one original owner who initially purchased an Omega from jewelers J W Benson, in London, but had a change of heart when the watch didn’t seem to keep accurate time. The jeweler agreed to exchange the Omega for the Rolex as at the time the Omega would have been more expensive. A stroke of genius as history would have it, as of course now, this beautiful chronograph is of much more value than the Omega would have been!

However, one cannot place only a financial value on a watch such as this, the utter beauty of the watch - an immaculate silver sunburst Panda dial with applied baton hour markers, rich black recessed subdials, and graceful stick hands with subtle luminous inserts - is undeniable. The applied Rolex crown at noon is underwritten by the Rolex Cosmograph and the "small" Daytona signatures, and is encapsulated under plexiglass, completed with an original and correct steel 300 units calibrated bezel and pump pusher chronograph buttons. The watch is in unbelievably good condition with minimal signs of light wear and is paired with its original 1960s bracelet that is also in remarkable condition and barely showing signs of stretch.

You will be hard pushed to find a better example of this rare and desirable reference from Rolex.
