Tudor Oyster Prince - Submariner - Small-Rose - Model Reference 7928 - Mark 2 Dial - c.1967
A Tudor Submariner Small Rose, Oyster-Prince, Automatic, Model 7928, Produced circa.1967. In Original Condition, a Much Sought After and Collectible Watch.
In 1926, “The Tudor” was registered as a trademark by a watch dealer called 'Veuve de Philippe Hüther'. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, took over “The Tudor” brand in 1936 with a desire to offer his retailers an alternative, more affordable range of watches to be sold alongside his legendary Rolex timepieces.
The Tudor Reference 7928 is perhaps one of the most classic Tudor sports models. It saw a long production run from approximately 1959 until approximately 1968. There are several versions of the 7928.
What's On Offer
This is a watch with buckets of charisma, in general, a much sought-after reference, and this is a particularly handsome example with gilt minute track, and silver writing, making it the MK 2 dial variation and rounded crown guards - widely considered a MK 4 case. The black dial is well preserved and boasts luminous hour indices which have aged to a beautiful buttery hue, and stylish Rolex Mercedes hands with lume still intact and in excellent condition.
The upper half of the dial features the classic small Tudor Rose underwritten by ”Oyster-Prince“. The lower section of the dial features the ”200m = 660ft” SUBMARINER ” and the two last lines ” Rotor ” and ” Self-winding ” – which of course denoted the automatic movement.
The unpolished case (case back signed Rolex) does have signs of wear as does the bezel, however, it is only to be expected from a watch of this age and forms part of the watch's character, after all, part of the joy of vintage watches is the previous life they have had. As it is a tool watch that was originally designed for divers and this one was likely used for its intended purpose, however, we have not had the watch case polished and prefer to keep it as is, as our feeling is it has probably never been polished, and likewise, the bezel insert is scuffed and scratched but this is an honest looking tool watch, and we hope you agree! The watch is offered for sale with its original Rolex signed Oyster bracelet reference 7206 dated 1/68 which is the 1st quarter of 1968 production. This would be a worthy contender for any serious collection if you are looking for an honest example of the 7928.
The caseback has been engraved with the name L.K Griffiths, more than likely the original owner who was possibly in the military as this type of crude engraving is something that was often attributed to military personnel in a bid to keep the watch from being stolen.
