Rolex, A Fine and Rare Stainless Steel Self-Winding Oyster Perpetual (Explorer), Model Reference: 6098 from circa. 1951-52 with Arabic Numeral Dial.
In 1953, the not-yet-Sir Edmund Hillary and his expedition partner, Tenzing Norgay, became the first men to ever successfully reach the summit of Everest. They did so with a Rolex on their wrists, an Oyster Perpetual that would prove to be the ancestor of the Explorer.
This particular watch is the same reference (6098) as the Everest watch worn by Tenzing and Hillary, but likely a slightly different dial configuration, an iconic piece representing the very DNA of the horology titans.
What’s On Offer
A cracking example of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 6098 from c.1951 with a substantial 36mm dial boasting some handsome patina. The outer of the dial has darkened evenly toward the perimeter and adds a charismatic depth. The leaf hands have taken on a striking peachy sherbet hue which is sure to get better with time. The Arabic numerals are pronounced with charming signs of age similar to the signature. The tonneau case is in great condition and showcases this well-heeled example perfectly. It's a beautiful watch with a fine vintage, now get your climbing boots on...
