Limited edition 50th Anniversary Edition of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Reference 3184.108.40.206.01.001 c.2007
One small step for the Omega Speedmaster, one giant leap for mankind.
Having accompanied all six Apollo lunar missions, the Omega Speedmaster is engraved into the horological halls of fame- it's the first watch worn on the moon. Originally conceived in 1957, Omega are honouring its legacy with a faithful, limited edition production which is incredibly faithful to the moonwatch, and expands on its already world-beating accuracy with modern technological developments.
To this date, no other watch has been verified as reliable and accurate by NASA for use in EVA situations (extravehicular activity): the Speedmaster has been rigorously tested and re-tested to the most extreme environmental and atmospheric conditions possible. It arguably gained its biggest leap in reputation aboard Apollo 13, when it was used to time a crucial 14-second burn to ensure safe return from the moon's surface after a critical mechanism on board failed. For this, Apollo 13 astronauts gave their Snoopy awards (NASA medal of honour) to Omega for "dedication, professionalism, and outstanding contributions in support of the first United States Manned Lunar Landing Project"
Omega produced only 1,957 of these watches in line with the year that the Speedmaster came into existence. Each and every one is numbered on the dial as a division of 1,957, this particular example being 1661. They are incredibly faithful to the originals, with the only modification being a beautiful exhibition case back, which reveals the inner workings of the Co-Axia 3201 movement, an incredibly accurate chronometer-certified movement which is hand-wound only. The case back is engraved by Omega: "Co-Axial Chronometer Speedmaster - 50th Anniversary Limited Series". There is considerable speculation (admittedly not verified) that the dials in this Anniversary limited series are made of ceramic, hence their still pristine appearance and slight matte effect. If this is true, they stand out from other Speedmasters, and it would explain the unusually light-absorbent properties of the dial.
What's on offer
This particular Speedmaster Moonwatch is in excellent, near-mint condition. The case, glass and bracelet are all nearly entirely unscathed, though the case does show microscopic signs of having been worn. Should you wish, these can be spa polished (very light polish only to remove delicate surface marks), which would leave the watch in perfect condition. The movement runs immaculately, and the watch will receive a 12-month warranty from us at VWS. This watch unfortunately comes without original box and papers, but will be supplied with a custom handmade leather presentation pouch. The price we are asking for this rare limited edition piece more than reflects the fact it comes without its original box or paperwork as most of these watches you will find as full sets are selling for sums in excess of our asking price and are likely not in as mint condition as this piece we are offering for sale!
