The 1970s were a period of enormous change for the Swiss watch industry. Mechanical watchmaking still dominated the established brands, but electronic timekeeping was developing at remarkable speed and quartz offered levels of accuracy that conventional mechanical movements simply couldn't match.

Omega was very much part of that technological shift. The company experimented with several forms of electronic timekeeping before developing its own generation of quartz movements, and the Megaquartz name became associated with some of the most technically interesting Omega watches of the decade.

The 32 KHz proudly displayed on the dial referred to the movement's operating frequency of 32,768 Hz. It seems unremarkable now because that frequency subsequently became commonplace in quartz watches, but in the early 1970s it represented a significant step forward from the lower-frequency quartz technology that had preceded it.

Omega didn't hide the new technology inside traditionally styled cases either. Watches from this period frequently embraced the design language of the decade, and reference 196.0030 is a particularly good example. Its broad tonneau-shaped case, integrated bracelet appearance and day-date display make it unmistakably a product of the 1970s.

These early Megaquartz watches now occupy an interesting corner of Omega collecting. They represent a period when the company was looking towards an electronic future and experimenting with technology that would fundamentally change everyday watchmaking.

What’s on Offer

Here we have an Omega Genève Megaquartz 32 KHz Day-Date, reference 196.0030, dating from approximately 1973.

The watch has a substantial 39mm stainless-steel case with the broad, angular profile so strongly associated with 1970s design. At approximately 45mm from top to bottom, it has plenty of wrist presence without relying on the oversized dimensions of many modern watches.

Its grey sunburst dial is particularly attractive. The finish changes character as the light moves across it, while applied baton hour markers and luminous baton hands keep the layout clean and easy to read. At 12 o'clock sits the distinctive red Omega emblem, with the OMEGA MEGAQUARTZ 32 KHz signature immediately beneath.

At 3 o'clock is the framed day-and-date display, while the Genève name sits above 6 o'clock. Together with the angular case and integrated bracelet design, it gives the watch a wonderfully authentic early-1970s appearance.

The watch retains its original Omega-etched Plexiglass and is fitted to its stainless-steel Omega bracelet, reference 1237/223, complete with signed folding clasp.

Inside is the Omega Calibre 1315, an eight-jewel quartz movement from Omega's early generation of 32 KHz electronic watches.

There are some visible marks and scratches to the case and bracelet consistent with its age and use, but we think they suit a watch like this rather well – it remains an honest vintage example rather than something that has been made to look artificially new.

A Note About Servicing and Warranty

This watch is being sold on behalf of the family of a watch collector, who have asked us to assist with the sale of an entire collection.

Its service history is unknown and, given the number of watches involved, the family has chosen not to incur the considerable expense of servicing every watch before it is offered for sale. We have therefore priced this example accordingly and it is being offered as seen, unserviced and without a warranty.

If you would prefer the watch to be serviced before receiving it, this can be arranged through our watchmaker at an additional cost. Simply leave a note when placing the watch in your basket and we will contact you to discuss the options.

If a service is carried out by our watchmaker, the watch will then be supplied with a 12-month warranty.
