An Antique 1940s WW2  British Military Pocket Watch With A Beautiful Porcelain Dial Featuring Original Military Engravings and Calibre 38 Movement

GSTP watches were made by numerous manufacturers but were all of similar design, which was more than likely specified by the British authorities.  The British armed forces were slow to embrace change and consequently, when war broke out again in 1939 they were ill-prepared with insufficient timepieces for the servicemen and women. Pocket watches were hurriedly purchased from various Swiss manufacturers in anticipation of shortages. 

Most of these watches were regarded as 'General Service' and classified as Temporary Pattern'. These pocket watches became the timekeeping workhorses of the early part of the war whilst more appropriate wristwatches were being commissioned.

This stunning Omega pocket watch with a beautiful porcelain dial was issued by the MoD at some point during the Second World War. The case is coated in nickel which does show some wear, there is a little brass peeping through, but this is to be expected from a timepiece that has survived a World War and is still ticking away 80 years later - every military piece has battle scars and this merely adds to the appeal, it's why we love vintage and military! 

The case back boasts original military engravings which read:  G.S.T.P F017565 and of course the pheon - the military arrow that denotes the watch as property of the MoD. The original white dial boasts the synonymous bold Arabic numerals we expect to see on a military dial, and the hands still boast some original lume which has aged to a beautiful pumpkin colour. There are some hairline blemishes in the porcelain on the sub dial at 6 o'clock, they are slight and not concerning but we do like to point these things out. 

These timepieces belonged to soldiers so we can forgive a few bumps and bruises along the way surely? This piece is a beautiful thing to have, it would make a lovely desk accessory and is working perfectly. Treat yourself?
