International Watch Company, Schaffhausen, produced these Limited Edition Pilots Chronograph’s in 2006. Dedicating them to the 75th anniversary of the publication of Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s’ novel, Vol de Nuit (Night Flight), which became an international best seller when it was first published in 1931.

So 1,931 pieces were produced worldwide, only 1630 of them in a steel case as is this watch we have for sale. Ours is one of the earliest produced being number 0044/1630. The watch was not however sold to the previous original owner until September of 2007.

The one previous owner from whom we acquired the watch is a retired GP, so the watch has not had a particularly hard life and has been well looked after and indeed went back to IWC in April 2012 for a service, for which we have the original receipt and warranty card.

The stainless steel 42mm case houses the 25 jewelled, IWC calibre c79320 automatic movement with a power reserve of 44 hours. The movement has the day and date aperture at 3 o’clock and the continuous second sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The dark brown dial (mostly appears black), then has two grey/silver chronograph sub dials at 12 and 6 o’clock. This is all complimented by the luminous Arabic numerals and military/pilot style ‘dagger’ hands.

The case shows some very light signs of wear, in particular the bezel ring as can be seen in our close up photographs. We have not had the case polished as we prefer not to, but will gladly have the marks polished out by our watch maker at no additional cost should you wish it upon purchase?

The case back features an engraved portrait of the pilot in his flying helmet and also the edition number and unique case reference number.

Each watch when new was supplied with a copy of “Night Flight” that also contains additional illustrative material not previously published. Our watch comes complete with this book and both inner and outer boxes together with 2 x card warranties and additional invoices and valuation from the supplying IWC AD. So in other words a complete set!

The watch is photographed on a (worn) replacement brown Hirsch heavy calf strap with contrasting stitching which is similar to the original IWC strap and the original IWC pin buckle is on this strap. We have however ordered a similar new replacement Hirsch strap and the watch will be supplied on this with the original IWC buckle on it.

In conclusion we would say that this watch is in overall superb condition, and has clearly been cared for. It comes complete with original special-edition boxes, leather bound LE book, instruction and warranty manuals, guarantee cards stamped by the UK IWC agent and even the original unused IWC cleaning cloth all accompany this very collectible limited edition time piece.
