The history of IWC’s popular Big Pilot’s Watch stretches further back in time than the history of most wristwatches. The company from Schaffhausen has a rich history of producing timepieces for use in the cockpit. IWC produced its first Pilot’s watch in 1936, named the ‘Special Pilot’s Watch'. IWC first made the watch for the German Air Force in 1940. Observation watches inspired the styling for 55-mm-diameter timepieces, although this is a much more wearable watch at 46mm! Originally designed as dependable and exact instruments for the cockpit, Pilot’s Watches are now treasured sports timepieces that prove their worth in everyday situations.

A fantastic Limited Edition example of the Big Pilot's Watch from 2018 in a bronze case, that was produced in a limited run of 1500 pieces and is supplied with original box and papers and in superb pre-owned condition. The rich black dial is in perfect condition with the characteristic san serif Arabic numerals and military triangle flanked by two dots at 12 o’clock. The rhombic hands are trimmed with blued steel as is the seven-day hand. In addition to the dial, the conical crown is another unmistakable feature, and a user-friendly one, too, because the crown’s shape makes it easy to use when wearing gloves. The bronze casing has weathered a little as it has been worn in a tropical climate for an extended period, giving it a very unique look and tremendous character. 

The original owner of this watch also purchased an additional strap and buckle from IWC with the watch when new to be able to preserve the original strap and alternate to prolong their life. So both straps will be supplied with this watch.

A very handsome watch from an iconic brand with a significant place in aviation watchmaking history and with the added bonus of being produced in a limited run of 1500 watches only in 2017 and now discontinued and unavailable from IWC, so potentially a great investment as it will become more sought after in time, pardon the pun! Bronze editions are still available from IWC but with different dial configurations and with much smaller power reserves as this particular watch has a huge 7-day reserve movement.
