Hamilton has a long association with military timekeeping, but its British military watches of the 1970s represent a particularly interesting chapter. As the era of the English-made Smiths military watch drew to a close, Hamilton became one of the manufacturers supplying robust mechanical wristwatches to the British Armed Forces.

The familiar Hamilton military watch of this period is often encountered with W10 markings, denoting British Army issue. Considerably less commonly seen are watches carrying the 6BB designation, identifying them as having been issued to the Royal Air Force.

Produced during the mid-1970s, these watches combined a distinctly period tonneau-shaped stainless-steel case with the traditional requirements of a military timepiece: excellent legibility, fixed strap bars, luminous hands and markers, hacking seconds and a clearly marked military dial.

Hamilton used its Calibre 649, based on the ETA 2750, a manually wound 17-jewel movement modified with a hacking facility. Pulling the crown stops the seconds hand, allowing the watch to be accurately synchronised – an important practical feature for military use.

The Genève-signed RAF examples form a particularly interesting variation of the 6BB watch and are much less frequently encountered than the standard Army-issued Hamiltons.

Here we have an excellent Hamilton Genève 6bb RAF-issued military watch from 1974, presented in superb condition and retaining the unmistakable appearance of a British military watch of the period.

The matt black dial is particularly striking. Large white Arabic numerals are surrounded by a highly defined railway-style minute track, with luminous plots positioned around its perimeter. The sword-shaped hour and minute hands retain their aged luminous material, which has developed an attractive warm cream tone.

At 12 o'clock sits the luminous triangular marker, followed by the Hamilton Genève signature and the important circled T, identifying the use of tritium luminous material. The British military Broad Arrow appears prominently above 6 o'clock, while the small SWISS signature is positioned at the very bottom of the dial.

The dial presents beautifully, with the crisp printing and remarkably clean black surface making this an especially attractive example.

Its brushed stainless-steel tonneau-shaped case is quintessentially 1970s and measures approximately 35mm across and 41mm lug-to-lug. The watch uses fixed strap bars, a characteristic feature of British military watches designed to prevent the loss of the watch should one side of the strap fail.

The caseback carries its original military engravings, including the Broad Arrow and 6BB/5238290, identifying its RAF issue. The individual issue markings conclude with /74, confirming 1974 as its year of issue.

Inside is the manually wound Hamilton Calibre 649, based upon the ETA 2750, with 17 jewels, hacking centre seconds and an approximate 40-hour power reserve.

The watch is fitted to a sand-coloured NATO-style strap, which provides a particularly good contrast against the black dial and brushed steel case while remaining entirely appropriate for its military character.
