By the early 1970s, Hamilton had taken over the supply of mechanical General Service wristwatches to the British military following the end of the Smiths W10 era. The resulting watches are among the most distinctive British military timepieces of the decade, instantly recognisable by their purposeful black dials and angular cushion-shaped cases.

Examples were supplied to different branches of the Armed Forces, with their caseback markings identifying where they were issued. W10 denotes British Army issue, while 6BB identifies watches supplied to the Royal Air Force. Royal Navy examples carried their own service designation.

Function dictated virtually every aspect of the design. The black dial provided strong contrast against large white Arabic numerals, luminous hour markers and luminous-filled hands, while fixed strap bars reduced the possibility of the watch being lost in service. A circled T identified the use of tritium luminous material and the Broad Arrow marked the watch as British government property.

These Hamiltons were also equipped with a hacking seconds mechanism, allowing the seconds hand to be stopped when setting the time so that watches could be precisely synchronised – a particularly useful feature in a military environment.

The manually wound 17-jewel movement belongs to the dependable ETA 2750 family used in these British military Hamiltons, providing straightforward, robust mechanical timekeeping in keeping with the utilitarian nature of the watch.

Here we have a particularly attractive Hamilton 6BB British military watch issued to the Royal Air Force in 1975, with its military provenance clearly recorded on the caseback.

The matt black dial has survived extremely well. Bold white Arabic numerals provide excellent legibility, surrounded by a precise railway-style minute track and luminous hour plots. The luminous material has developed an attractive warm butter tone with age, providing just the right amount of vintage character against the otherwise monochrome dial.

At 12 o'clock sits the luminous triangular marker, with the Hamilton signature and circled T immediately below. The latter denotes the use of tritium luminous material. The British military Broad Arrow is prominently positioned above 6 o'clock, with SWISS printed discreetly at the very bottom of the dial.

The original military-style hands remain nicely matched to the aged hour plots, while the slender centre seconds hand completes the exceptionally clear and functional dial layout.

Its 35mm stainless-steel cushion-shaped case is one of the defining features of these 1970s Hamilton military watches. Measuring approximately 41mm lug-to-lug, it has a compact footprint but wears extremely well thanks to the broad case profile. The case displays the expected marks of wear acquired over its life while remaining in excellent overall condition.

The watch also retains its fixed strap bars, an important feature of the original military specification.

The caseback carries the markings 6BB/523-8290, together with the British military Broad Arrow and 786/75. The 6BB designation confirms Royal Air Force issue, while the final /75 records its year of issue as 1975.

This example is currently fitted to an expandable stainless-steel bracelet, giving it a slightly different appearance from the more commonly encountered NATO-strapped examples while remaining extremely comfortable on the wrist.
