Breitling Windrider J Class Automatic Men’s Yachting Wrist Watch Model Reference: 80250. c.1994.
Leon Breitling was a highly skilled Swiss watchmaker who made both timepieces and intelligent measuring tools in his St Imier workshop. After his Breitling pocket watch company was started in 1884, it quickly earned a reputation for developing innovative features and remains, to date, a watch manufacturer with a formidable reputation.
While the brand’s links with aviation are widely known, many fail to realise that Breitling has made watches for sailors for at least 40 years and has a strong historic connection to yachting, with many sponsorship links.
The Breitling J-Class range was conceived in the 1980s for sailors and named after the large 40-metre J-Class yachts that sailed in the America’s Cup in the 1930s (some of these magnificent vessels have been restored and are still in action today.)
This Windrider J-Class (model reference number 80250) dates back to 1994 and features a red and gold unidirectional rotating bezel, (red being the harder to find combination out of all the J Class variants) surrounding an off-white dial with date aperture at 3.
The watch has a distinctive and highly sought after ‘bullet’ bracelet, made up of torpedo shaped links and closing with a folding butterfly clasp, signed ‘Breitling.’ This unique and opulent stainless steel bracelet is also shot through with gold bands, creating a twinkling two-tone effect, and comes with spare links should these be required. Bracelets such as this are highly sought after by collectors of the brand, as they fit several different Breitling models.
The screw down crown renders the piece fully waterproof, as one would expect with a yachting watch.
