A Superb Rolex model 1680 Submariner Date from c.1979, with a Stunning Dial Boasting Pumpkin Lume. Very Much Sought-After and Hugely Collectable.

The Rolex Submariner story begins in 1953 when the no-date sports watch began its legacy as one of the most important sports watches in history. The first models officially made their debut at Baselworld in 1954.

16 years after the Submariner made its debut, Rolex decided to produce a version with the date. In 1969 Rolex introduced the reference 1680 Submariner with Date. The introduction of a date window would prove to be a landmark for the Rolex Submariner and it superseded the non-date version by a substantial margin.

The reference 1680 started the transition of the Submariner from a practical tool watch to a more luxurious wearing accessory. One of the most iconic watches in the world, the Submariner's appeal spans continents, generations and gender, and shows no signs of waning.

What’s On Offer

This is a superb example of the Rolex 1680 hailing from the late 1970s. The dial is incredibly well preserved, stunning in fact. The layout of the dial is immediately familiar: upside-down triangle at 12 o’clock; baton-shaped markers at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock; and dot markers for the remaining hours, but just look at the colour of the lume! That beautiful pumpkin hue brings the whole dial to life and adds so much warmth and character. The synonymous 'Mercedes' hands are in fantastic shape with corresponding pumpkin lume and the date aperture at 3 o'clock looks sharp underneath the cyclops. The stunning dial is encapsulated underneath a 'top hat' plexiglass which is framed by the rich black bezel - also in superb order.

The case and Oyster bracelet both look well with only light signs of wear. The bracelet is a 93150 Oyster with 580 end pieces, the clasp is however an earlier one marked 3/71. All in all, this watch is in great shape, an absolute stunner! This reference is extremely collectable and much sought-after, and rare to find in such excellent condition.
