The stainless steel Omega Speedmaster ‘ED White’ was the last of the straight lug and "None Professional Dial" watches produced before the twisted lugs were introduced. The nickname ‘Ed White’ was given due to it being worn on the first-ever spacewalk by astronaut Ed White. This reference went on to become one of the most sought-after vintage timepieces among watch collectors.
What’s On Offer
This is one of those watches that even if you have the funds for, you can't necessarily own. It must be bestowed upon you by the universe - which is how you've happened upon this page obviously - it's meant to be.
A very rare iteration indeed, this particular example of the 'Ed White' boasts a very unusual grey "Professional" dial, of which there are only known to be around 10 in existence. Omega had never retailed the 105.003 or other vintage Speedmaster references from new, with this grey dial, so the likely explanation is that these were made in batches or as prototypes, and used as replacement dials during an Omega service. Unfortunately, the original owner has passed away, but his son from whom the watch came from does recall his father sending the watch to Omega for service back in the 1970s which is when he thinks the dial was probably swapped by Omega. There is some paperwork that will come with the watch and we can tell you this relates to the watch being sent to Omega for service/testing as the owner was complaining about it, and his son thinks it may well have been at this point in 1975 when it went back to Omega that the dial was also changed!
I have to add, even the remarkably good condition of the dial is rare, historically grey service dials don't tend to age well so this really is a special find and the most likely explanation for its condition is that it has been sitting in a draw for many years after it was inherited by the son of the original owner, as the watch has been in the same family for many years!
There are some signs of general wear to this watch, mainly to the bezel, which is to be expected at over half a century old, however, it takes nothing away from the overall charm, after all, the scars of a watch's previous life form part of the joy of vintage watch collecting. The watch also, as can be seen on our images, comes on its original flat link Omega steel bracelet and end links.
Whether you are a keen vintage collector, an avid Omega fan, or simply have a penchant for extremely rare finds, this watch would make a worthy addition to any collection and the likelihood is that you will never come across this opportunity again and especially to find one with a rare dial in such nice condition.
