A Charming Gruen 10K Gold Filled Mystery Hour Dial Watch in Beautiful Vintage Condition, c.1953

The Gruen Watch Company was formerly one of the largest watch manufacturers in the United States. It was in business from around 1894 to 1958 and was based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was founded in 1894 by German-born watchmaker Dietrich Grün, who changed the spelling of his name to "Gruen" because the letter ü does not exist in English.

A charming little watch from Gruen here with bags of character. The 10k gold-filled case gives all the luxury of a gold watch but without the exorbitant price tag. Also, you have to love the fun angle of the mystery dial - see how the hour hand appears to float with no visible source of power. That's the mystery. Over the years, the mystery dial has been incorporated into many a watch by a host of manufacturers. This one isn't so hard to work out, it is attached to the central silver dial which rotates on the central pinion. This watch is in nice vintage condition with a stylish dial design that has a little patina spattering, there are applied hour markers to the outer perimeter and the inset gloss gold dial boasts the Gruen signature. The different finishes of the 3 discs that make up the dial combine to produce a really beautiful tri-colour effect. The case is also in beautiful condition and the twisted faceted design adds dimension and length to the overall aesthetic. This is a charming watch and certainly finding one is this condition is rare, snap it up and you've got yourself a unique watch in beautiful shape.
