An Iconic American Military Bulova A-11 Watch Which Was Reissued To British Troops According to the Caseback Engravings - A Rather Rare Find!

Bulova is a New York based corporation making watches and clocks. It was founded and incorporated as the J. Bulova Company in 1875 by Joseph Bulova (1851-1936), an immigrant from Bohemia. It was reincorporated under the name Bulova Watch Company in 1923, and became part of the Loews Corporation in 1979.

Bulova has enjoyed a longstanding heritage with the U.S. military. In the early 1940s, with World War II underway and the need for American involvement becoming increasingly clear, Bulova entered into an agreement with the United States government to help aid in the war effort.

The Bulova A-11, the watch was worn on the wrists of Allied soldiers in World War II. The watch, known as a “hack” watch, got its name because soldiers would pull the crowns out and “hack” the seconds hand at the 12 o’clock position to perfectly synchronize their watches for battle.

What’s On Offer

Despite being an American production and specification, and solely produced by American companies, the A-11 also saw service with the RAF (Royal Air Force) under the 6B/234 designation as illustrated on the watch here which seems to have been originally issued to the American forces as an A-11, and reissued to British troops as its original American markings have been overwritten by the British. We found a rather interesting article here, which elaborates further.

The watch is in great shape, the case does have some signs of wear and there is a little brass peeping through, however, this is indicative of the age of the watch and takes nothing away from the overall package. The dial is almost blemish-free and the Arabic numerals and minute track are sharp and clear and the leaf hands and central seconds are also in good order. This is a really great looking watch on the wrist, an unusual piece of military history with both American and British markings, a great addition to any military collection.
