Omega Seamaster Automatic Chronometer Reference 168.022-166.028 dated to 1968 by serial number. Calibre 564 Automatic COSC-Chronometer Certified movement.

The Omega Seamaster was developed by the Swiss watchmaking giant to combine Omega's knack for accuracy, robust design and universal wearability. Beyond just looking the part, the watch had to be firmly functional and reliable beyond merely the conditions associated with everyday wear. This led to a very uniform technical brief which played out very similarly even if the case and dial configuration varied enormously: an automatic movement, a legible dial and a waterproof case which sat comfortably on the wrist without making too much of a statement. When Omega strayed from this, people tended to take note, particularly with this double reference 168.022-166.028, which features an Omega Calibre 564 automatic movement with the rare benefit of being COSC-Chronometer Certified. This level of accuracy was typically reserved for Omega Speedmasters, eternally associated with timing parts of the Apollo journeys to and from the moon, but makes this reference stand out. There's no mistaking the case design: it's strongly reminiscent of similar tonneau case descendants that have appeared in the Seamaster range, but we love the subtle variation that can be seen in the movement, dial and even lug design which place the watch between a sports and a dress piece!

Not just that, the dial here is of a subtle granular, silvered design which really pops underwater or above ground. Together with the applied hour indices and lovely creamy lume plots, the dial is a wonder to look at and incredibly easy to read. It truly is the best of both worlds: modern standards of accuracy on the inside, and a beautiful retro design which has dated so wonderfully thanks to its excellent preservation.

What's on offer

Though this watch has been worn, and there is evidence of this on the case, we're impressed at how well it has fared since 1968. In most places, the original factory brushing is barely disturbed! The glass is in excellent condition, and has shielded the original dial from any defects other than a beautiful, creamy light patina effect from mild, continuous light exposure. Many dials end up ruined by light, but when only a ray or two get through to the drawer it's sat in, it can make wonderful things happen as evidenced here. The watch has recently seen expert service and inspection, so is currently running excellently and will continue to do so for many years to come. It will be guaranteed by us for 12 months from the date of sale, and is supplied in one of our handmade leather travel pouches.
