A Vintage Omega Speedmaster Professional ‘Mark II' - Ref. 145.014 - c. 1979 - Calibre 861 Chronograph with Stunning Lume Patina

The Omega Speedmaster Professional has a unique place in the history of space exploration, being the only piece of equipment used in all of NASA’s piloted space missions from Project Gemini, which started in 1961, to the current International Space Station program.

And when Buzz Aldrin, one of the two original moonwalkers first stepped onto the lunar surface in 1969, he was wearing an Omega Speedmaster Professional - earning the timepiece its ‘Moonwatch’ nickname (his walking partner, Neil Armstrong, was also the proud owner of an Omega Speedmaster, but decided to leave his as back-up onboard the spacecraft)!

To celebrate the first moon landing, the engraved Omega Hippocampus was removed from the Speedmaster, and the phrases ‘The First Watch Worn On The Moon’ and ‘Flight qualified by NASA for all manned space missions’ were added to case back. In 1971, the Hippocampus was reincorporated, and this design is still used for the model today.

The first Speedmaster was actually produced in 1957 as a sports and racing watch - and the model went through various iterations before the brand decided to replace the original 321 calibre movement with a more accurate 861 calibre movement in 1968, produced by world-renowned Swiss watchmaker, Lemania.

What’s On Offer

This 1979 Omega Speedmaster is the Mark II iteration, with model reference number 145.014. It has a black Tachymetere bezel and matching black dial with Tritium inserts in the elegant pencil style hands and at the five minute markers which have aged evenly into a beautiful shade of vanilla.

Paired with its original stainless steel linked reference 1153 bracelet, this is a durable and attractive timepiece with an impressive history and heritage - running in perfect working order on a hand-wound caliber 861 movement with 17 jewels. There are minimal signs of wear to the dial and hands and the condition of the case is also excellent, with only a few marks and blemishes on what looks to be an otherwise, unpolished case. A vintage watch with contemporary dimensions and timeless styling.
