c.1970 Omega Seamaster Chronograph 'Anakin Skywalker' Ref 145.023 - 'Hecho en Mexico' bracelet
Released together with the Omega Seamaster 'Darth Vader', the 'Anakin Skywalker' was so named for its lighter colour combination than its Sith counterpart, and has become a highly sought-after cult piece amongst collectors. Bright, funky, and chunky, the Skywalker's tungsten-coated octagonal case makes it firmly functional, but its dial really makes the whole thing "pop". The watch is an undeniable gem from a trailblazing era of watchmaking; when form and function overlapped, with larger watches becoming as much a question of iconic, colourful design as raw usability.
The octagonal case is coated in tungsten, a rare move for Omega and one which has added to the uniqueness and collectability of the model, partially due to the fact that the coating makes the case almost entirely scratch-proof. A two-part case construction, the movement is housed separately within shockproof 'O' rings, set inside the protective tungsten outer. This weighty, yet eye-catching construction brings the case size up to 44mm - certainly not on the small side, but the watch still sits very well in proportion, and is extremely comfortable to wear! A 1970 watch, clearly the tungsten coating has done its job, as there are only microscopic signs of wear to be mentioned on the case. Powered by the renowned Omega Caliber 861 movement, which as you will likely know was fitted to many different Omega references, the most famous being the Omega Moon watches!
What makes this watch so memorable, however, is the dial. Subtly contrasting concentric rings of vivid colour jump out from the sturdy housing, and bring the piece to life. Featuring an orange chronograph hand with solid pushers at 2:00 and 4:00, a white internal Tachymetric bezel, pale blue chapter ring and deep blue center, the dial manages to layer colours beautifully without affecting legibility. It's a funky 1970s tool watch with a rich heritage and a cult following, and has survived incredibly well to this day.
What's on offer
This Omega 'Anakin Skywalker' Seamaster 145.023 is in excellent condition. The case back does show very faint rubbing, though this is microscopic and to be expected for a watch of its age. The dial on this specimen is finely preserved, giving away no clues as to its age apart from mild, vintage patination on the bezel edges. The watch keeps excellent time and comes with a 12 months mechanical guarantee.
The original bracelet is also in remarkable condition, and is a rare 'Mexican' bracelet production variant; produced under license for Omega, bearing 'hecho en Mexico' on the clasp inner. The bracelet, we believe is original to the watch which we believe was originally sold new in Mexico!
The dial in particular is still very sharp, vivid, and faithful to the watch's original condition. We will truly miss this watch when it is sold as I have enjoyed owning and wearing it for a short period myself!
