Hamilton - a (British Army) military issue gentleman's wrist watch. The watch back is numbered/signed W10-6645-99 523-8290 /I\ 2138/77. The watch has a manual wind "hacking feature" calibre 649 movement housed inside a stainless steel uni-shell case.

For a watch that is an approximately 38 year old MOD issued military watch this is a fantastic piece of history and in great condition.

The Case and Crown

A cushion shaped one piece case, where the movement is removed from the top through the glass opening. The brushed steel case measures approximately 36mm in diameter without the crown which makes this watch a good size for both men and women. The case is in very good condition for a military watch with no major marks and no dings, with sharp unpolished edges. The crown appears the correct size etc, but is possibly a replacement. However functions perfectly and looks well!

The Dial and Hands

The black dial which is typical of this style and type of military watch is signed Hamilton with a “T” in a circle, which denotes it is the original Tritium dial. It also says “Swiss” below the 6 marker and has the MOD arrow (Pheon) mark on the dial above the 6. Apart from a couple of marks on the dial, (the most noticeable being a scratch through the “M” in Hamilton) the dial is in great shape. The original Tritium lume is still intact. The Tritium dots on the rail track minute marker ring on the outer edge of this dial are fabulous having a fantastic even yellow colour. The same yellow lume is also present in the hands on this particular watch. The watch came to us as it is at the moment but our research tells us the seconds and the hours hands appear original to the watch but the minutes hand is an old replacement which looks to have been on the watch some time as it does appear aged, but again doesn’t look out of place or character for this watch. For those so inclined, it wouldn’t be difficult or expensive to find a correct replacement to match the other originals.

The Movement

The movement in this watch is a Hamilton signed calibre 649; 17 jewel hand wound movement with a hacking function for accurate time setting.The calibre “649” was actually made by ETA and called a calibre 2750, but Hamilton re-branded them. This particular movement has been checked and is running well and keeping time as it should.

The Strap/Bracelet

Typical of a military watch, this Hamilton also comes with fixed lug bars for added strength. We have chosen to photograph this watch on a new military/tropic style black Perlon one piece woven strap which in our opinion looks really handsome but if you prefer another colour or even style then please feel free to let us know and we will endeavour to supply an alternative strap usually at no additional cost. Or we can supply additional NATO straps or other styles or colours (at additional cost). If this is at the time of purchase/delivery, we can do this at a discount.

Box and Papers

These watches were obviously supplied through the MOD so as such would not have had any box or paperwork at the time of issue. Even though there are no original papers with this particular watch, a detailed invoice together with any warranty documents if applicable will be provided at the point of sale. In Conclusion

This is a great example of an iconic Hamilton military issued “W10” watch which were produced for the British Armed Forces between the 1960’s and 1970’s, when the (CWC) Cabot Watch Company took over the production.

It is a completely practical every day tool watch, ready to wear yourself or to be bought as a gift for that special person. It is also an excellent investment or heirloom piece, particularly as they are no longer produced and the modern equivalents are quartz. They were not produced in huge numbers and as they were military issue, many will not have survived active service!

We feel examples such as this are becoming more difficult to locate and are undervalued and as each year goes by the market for vintage watches continues to expand resulting in prices climbing even higher. So this is a very collectable 1970’s military watch which should provide an excellent financial investment as well as being something to treasure and enjoy.
