Introduced in 1957 as part of Omega’s professional line, the Speedmaster was originally designed for motorsport timing, with its tachymeter bezel and robust chronograph movement. Its place in history was secured in 1969 when it became the first watch worn on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission. Nicknamed the “Moonwatch,” the Speedmaster is celebrated for its precision, durability, and timeless design, remaining a favourite among astronauts, pilots, and watch enthusiasts worldwide.

We are pleased to present this preowned 1980 Omega Speedmaster Professional, reference 145.022-78, powered by the manual-wind Calibre 861. This example retains all the hallmarks that have made the “Moonwatch” an icon — the black stepped dial with luminous baton markers, triple-register chronograph layout, and white baton hands, all framed by the black tachymeter bezel for measuring speed over distance. The 42mm stainless steel case offers robust presence on the wrist, paired here with a period bracelet. Hesalite (plexiglass) crystal protects the dial, while the caseback proudly displays the Speedmaster’s heritage as the first watch worn on the Moon. The Calibre 861 — a direct descendant of the movement that went to the Moon — delivers reliable performance with a 48-hour power reserve. In excellent vintage condition, this watch captures the enduring appeal of Omega’s most famous chronograph.

NB: This watch is offered for sale as seen, as the watches service history is unknown and we are selling it on behalf of a watch collector's family who have asked us to help sell an entire collection. As there are quite a few watches to dispose of, the clients do not wish to spend unnecessary money on servicing each watch before its sold so we have priced the watches to reflect it being sold un-serviced and without a warranty but it can be arranged with our watchmaker at an additional cost if you wish.
