This Omega HS8 (Hydrographic Survey – the “8” denoting a wristwatch) is a superb piece of British military history. Issued to Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm pilots and navigators during WWII, these watches were essential tools, housing precise manual-wind movements used for critical aerial navigation.

This example remains in wonderfully original condition and retains its full military engravings, marking it clearly as an issued piece. The alloy case, crafted from Duralumin (a copper, aluminium, magnesium and manganese blend), was specifically designed with a matte finish to avoid cockpit glare. Its off-white dial, framed by bold Arabic numerals, has aged with an even spread of attractive patina that only decades of service could create.

The blued steel hands remain striking, complemented by the long, elegant seconds hand, while the case back displays the military arrow or Pheon along with its HS8 markings. These details confirm its role as part of the Royal Navy’s navigational kit — very likely worn during reconnaissance and ordinance missions. Occasionally a watch will also be marked 'Bravingtons', this was the name of a London jewellers who sold off surplus watches following the war - you will see this marking on the case back.
