Jaeger-LeCoultre holds a distinguished place in British military watch history, most famously as one of the “Dirty Dozen” suppliers commissioned to provide reliable wristwatches for soldiers during World War II. JLC’s contributions were valued for their accuracy, robustness, and legibility under harsh conditions, making them essential tools on the battlefield. Beyond the Dirty Dozen, Jaeger-LeCoultre produced navigational and pilot’s watches that reinforced its reputation as a trusted supplier to the Ministry of Defence.

Here is a truly singular JLC W.W.W. military timepiece — part of the vintage “Dirty Dozen” lineage but with an extraordinary twist. This example is believed to have undergone a dial replacement during service, likely shifting away from radium to a rare Promethium-marked dial (P)—a variant of this JLC Dirty Dozen watch we have never sold before. Promethium dials are exceedingly rare, with only a small handful known, making this example exceptionally special.

NB: For watches, the isotope Promethium-147 was used in luminous paint from the 1950s–1970s. Pm-147 emits low-energy beta radiation (electrons) with no gamma rays, making it much less hazardous than radium. It could safely excite phosphors on a dial to glow in the dark.

The dial remains a deep black with crisp white numerals, original cathedral hands, and beautiful even lume across the indices. The original military pheon still adorns the dial, and the case back bears its period issue engravings, a testament to its genuine provenance. With strong case integrity and a compelling narrative, this watch is a gem of military collecting—unique, rare, and full of story.
