A Very Well Presented Girard Perregaux Sea Hawk with a Tropical Dial, in Superb Condition, c.1940s

Girard-Perregaux, a renowned Swiss watchmaker, boasts a rich history that dates back to 1791. Founded by Jean-François Bautte in Geneva, the company initially specialized in crafting high-quality pocket watches. However, it was not until 1856 when Constant Girard married Marie Perregaux that the brand we know today was born. Under the leadership of Constant Girard and his son-in-law Léon Perregaux, Girard-Perregaux flourished and began producing exceptional timepieces.

They quickly gained recognition for their innovative designs and precise movements. In fact, they were awarded a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889 for their Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges. Throughout the years, Girard-Perregaux continued to push boundaries and break new ground within the watchmaking industry. In 1928, they introduced one of their most iconic models – the Art Deco-inspired Cat's Eye collection – which remains a symbol of elegance and femininity.

The brand also played a significant role in horological advancements. In 1965, they unveiled the Gyromatic HF movement with high-frequency vibrations of 36,000 beats per hour – an unprecedented achievement at that time. Girard-Perregaux's commitment to excellence led them to receive numerous accolades over the years, including several prizes at international competitions such as Neuchâtel Observatory trials.

What’s On Offer

This charming Girard Perregaux Sea Hawk is very military in style and very well could have been manufactured with that in mind, however, this example has ended up as a civilian watch with no military markings. The sub-dial at 6 o'clock, the Arabic numerals and the minute track are all synonymous with military watches of the 1940s. The dial has become tropical over time and boasts a beautiful, warm patina. The case and lugs are in nice shape and the watch has been paired with a modern grey leather strap to give it a contemporary twist. At 31mm, this piece is proportionally slighter than more modern watches, however, it wears beautifully on the wrist and would be perfectly appropriate for everyday wear or more formal occasions. The perfect all-rounder and a charismatic vintage watch.
