Many thanks,

A vintage, c1944 West End Watch Co wristwatch with a Calibre 10.68Z hand wind Longines signed movement. This is a typical military style West End/Longines watch as issued to military and Civil Service personnel in India.

Case and Crown

The case is in stainless steel with a stainless steel screw in back which has the ‘West End Watch Co’ star logo and the numbers 23078 and 201 etched on the outside of it. The latter is also etched to one of the watch lugs confirming that the case back and front are a matching pair.

The case back is also engraved with the inscription W.Todd in italics. The inside of the back has the number 6497. The crown has no signature.

The case and crown have quite a few blemishes and scratches with general signs of wear that are to be expected from a watch of this age and presumably having been an issued watch. There is also a small crack in one of the lugs, which we have tried to show in some of our photos. The watchcase has military style fixed lug bars.

Dial, Hands and Glass

This West End Watch Co signed dial is not in the best condition with some marks and a little fading! Underneath the name WEWC there is the faintest of letters, but we cannot make out what it might have said. There is a sub seconds dial at the 6 o’clock position. The dial is a nice and even cream colour with Arabic numerals at the hour positions, which is typical of this style of military watch. The hour and minute hands are black with luminous inlays, which have pieces of the yellow coloured lumen missing. The hands are again typical of this style of watch.

Overall the dial, hands and glass are in reasonable condition for a “tool” watch of the 1944 vintage.

The movement is the well-loved and robust Longines hand wind 15 jewel, Calibre 10.68Z which is again typical of the West End Watch Company as they had strong links with Longines, particularly in India. The movement bares the number 695****, which we have used to date the watch to 1944.

The watch comes on a brown open ended strap with a silver coloured pin buckle.

Box and Papers

There are no original papers or box with this watch however it comes with a detailed invoice provided at the time of sale. It can be supplied in our exclusive, genuine leather; VWS watch case as listed here.

In Conclusion

This is a classic 1940’s West End Watch Co wristwatch in average condition for its age. Many of this style of watch were presented to civil servants working in India at this time and these were marked with ‘CS (I)’ to denote this however this watch does not have this inscription, but we think, and our research shows that not all of the watch backs were marked as such and some were only marked on the inner dust covers. This particular watch has the inner dust cover missing so we cannot be absolutely certain but are confident that this is a Civil Service watch as all the other hallmarks seem to be there including an engraving with the name W Todd in italics on the outside back. We have seen this type of engraving on a number of watches over the years! As we cannot be 100% certain we are pricing this particular watch accordingly and will leave you to make up your own minds!
