Seiko released the “Seiko Sportsmatic 5 (the “Five”)” in 1963. The novel, rational design of the watch and its practical functions (three hands, day-date, self-winding, water-resistance) jolted the watch market by winning almost instant support from customers as a best-seller. The watch was designed to appeal to the new revolutionary generation of young people in the 1960s. Seiko created a watch that went where its wearers went, wet or dry, wild or sedate hence the emphasis on water and shock resistance.
The “5” is a reference to the attributes that any Seiko 5 watch would offer, i.e., automatic winding, a day and date display, water resistance, a recessed crown at 4 o'clock, and a durable case.

The appearance of this vintage Seiko 5 is still sharp today, the day-date window is framed with a steel bezel, and the tapered stick design of the hands is slick and complements the applied hour markers perfectly. The Seiko signature and '5' are also applied and add depth to the beautiful rich blue sunburst dial. This is a handsome watch with substantial enough proportions to suit comfortable, everyday wear and will transition seamlessly from casual to evening wear. A stylish, durable all-rounder with a rich bloodline. The watch case and plexi-crystal as you may see from our images show some marks but these are not as bad in the flesh as the photos depict! These blemishes can easily be rectified (in fact e will polish the glass before sending the watch out to you) should you wish, but we are selling the watch as it is and the price reflects this!
