c.1978 18 Carat Gold and Stainless Steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ref.16013 - Calibre 1575

With a solid 18 Carat gold fluted bezel, jet black dial and Jubilee bracelet, the Datejust 16013 makes for an elegant dress-style wear or even casual watch. Originally produced in 1978 (dated by serial number), this Datejust is testament to Rolex's deservedly enormous reputation as a watchmaker by how well it has aged. The watch face design is iconic, featuring solid gold reflective hour batons which match the hour, minute and second hands when the light catches them, and a magnifying date cyclops at 3:00. The dial also reads 'Superlative Chronometer - Officially Certified', a nod to the workhorse Calibre 1575 movement which powers it. These 1575s, certified by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) as chronometer-accurate, have earned a name as one of the most robust, durable and accurate movements ever produced, especially impressive given that it was first dropped into this watch over 40 years ago. The Jubilee bracelet is made up of central gold links with solid steel outer pieces, fastened by a Rolex Oyster Clasp with the signature Rolex crown. This same crown logo is seen on the watch crown itself, which is screw-down to aid the watch's waterproofnesss.

What's on offer

Though this Rolex has been worn since its production in 1978, it has been spared from significant damage in every regard. The glass being original to the watch, it has seen some light signs of scratching which are occasionally visible in the light (we've shown this in photos), which is also applicable to the case sides and back. This is only ever mild surface wear which could easily be remedied, but it is worth knowing about. That aside, the watch is in excellent condition and makes for a handsome, honest vintage Rolex. The movement is keeping excellent time, the bracelet showing very minimal stretch or 'sag' as can sometimes occur, and the non-reflective case parts (particularly the lugs) are in great condition, and still quite sharp, chunky and crisp.
