An Omega 2777-1 SC, Mechanical Wristwatch, issued to the RAF, 1953. Known as a '53 Fat Arrow' With Issue Markings, 6645 101000 6B/542 4889/53 - A Caliber: 283, 17j Movement

The Omega ‘Fat Arrow’ is a British Air Ministry (RAF) issued wristwatch. Its official title as denoted in the case back by Omega is the 2777-1 SC. Manufactured to the precise specifications of the Air Ministry in 1952 and delivered only in 1953 for one year. Hence they have acquired the nickname “53 Fat Arrow” or for the very original dials they were called the “53 Thin Arrow).

These watches were originally made to be waterproof and the 283 caliber shockproof movement was finished in rose gold. The watch was made antimagnetic so as not to affect the performance during flight operations.

They were originally lumed with radium, but the Royal Air Force insisted Omega recall the watches, as they were not safe. Omega swapped the radium dials for tritium and printed a fat white arrow to indicate the safer lume.

There were only 5900 of these watches manufactured and issued to the RAF and as such good examples are becoming rarer and increasingly harder to find.

What's on Offer

We have A fine example of the Fat Arrow from Omega. The black military dial has crisp white Arabic numerals, a white outer minute track with luminous pips, and white centre sweep seconds. The lume on the hour pips remains intact and has aged to a beautiful caramel colour as has the lume in the well-maintained sword hands. The Omega signature and fat arrow are also sharp and complete a beautiful dial which is showcased beautifully by the classic and well-proportioned lines synonymous with this very collectible watch. The stepped bezel and the case with oversized crown give a meaty and robust aesthetic to what is ultimately a very wearable tool watch that still holds its own against it's modern-day counterparts.

The case back is engraved /|\ 6645 101000 6B/542 4889/53 and has movement number 12905xxx.

The watch was very recently overhauled, serviced and checked over by the renowned military watch maker, John Senior. So rest assured it runs really well!
