Omega 1953 “Fat Arrow” - RAF-Issued Wrist Watch Ref. 2777-1-SC

The Omega ‘Fat Arrow’ is a British Air Ministry (RAF) issued wristwatch. Its official title as denoted in the case back by Omega is the 2777-1 SC. Manufactured to the precise specifications of the Air Ministry in 1952 and delivered only in 1953 for one year. Hence they have acquired the nick name “53 Fat Arrow” or for the very original dials they were called the “53 Thin Arrow).

These watches were originally made to be waterproof and the 283 calibre shockproof movement was finished in rose gold. The watch was made antimagnetic so as not to affect the performance during flight operations.

They were originally lumed with radium, but the Royal Air Force insisted Omega recall the watches, as they were not safe. Omega swapped the radium dials for tritium and printed a fat white arrow to indicate the safer lume.

The black military dial has white Arabic numerals, white outer minute track with luminous inserts and white centre sweep seconds.

The case back is engraved /|\ 6645 101000 6B/542 1467/53 and has movement number 12905xxx.

There were only 5900 of these watches manufactured and issued to the RAF and so good examples are becoming rarer and increasingly harder to find.

Overall Condition: This watch is in excellent condition over all, with only minor marks on the case consistent with age and military use. John Senior the military watchmaker known by many has relumed the original Omega dial and hands, and these are now in excellent condition with a lovely even patina across indices and hands. At the same time the watch was serviced and timed and a NOS glass fitted as the original (included) was incorrect. The original unsigned crown is again in superb condition. Screw-down case back with original Royal Air Force engravings is excellent.

With its fat, 36mm case, this 6B is a great size for modern wrists, and the RAF origins give the watch a fantastic piece of military history. These watches have become wildly popular over the past few years and they’re harder to come by than ever and here we have found a nice one, so don't miss it.
