In 1860 Italian watchmaker Giovanni Panerai opened a small watchmaker's shop in Florence on Ponte Alle Grazie to offer watch services and act as a watchmaking school. For many years, Panerai operated his small shop and school, but in the 1900s the company started making timepieces for the Italian military. They produced wrist-worn diving instruments and, between 1935 and 1970, delivered around 1,600 watches, most of them to the Italian Navy. 

Now well known as one of the world's most luxurious watch brands, Panerai is headquartered in Geneva and manufactures watches in Neuchâtel, Switzerland using movements manufactured in-house.
