Longines are one of the most respected watchmakers in the world and this very early (1961), Flagship sums up everything they're famous for.
From the polished, solid 9k gold case to the breath taking elegant art-deco dial this is a simply beautiful watch and comes on a new brown calf grain strap.
The perfectly straight original gilt hands blend beautifully with the silver/ivory dial and elegant Arabic numbers at 3-6-9 and 12 together with applied hour batons.
The condition of this watch is fantastic with only the smallest signs of wear to the watchcase itself. There is some very nice and even dial patina which can be seen in some of the photographs, but we hope you will agree this adds character to the vintage appearance of the watch!
Case and Crown
The solid 9k gold case is in excellent condition having had the lightest of cleans and a hand polish!
The case is fully hallmarked and was originally made for Longines by "B & Co" which stands for Baume & Company, 21 Hatton Garden. The London branch of Baume & Co in the 1950s and 60s, who were a Swiss watch manufacturer themselves, based in the village of Les Bois, in the Swiss Jura Mountains.
The case is quite large for a watch from this era and measures 35mm, without crown. The watch comes with the original Longines signed winding crown. The inside case back is signed 'Longines Fab Suisse Swiss Made' and has the case reference of '3403' which is likely the case makers reference.
Dial, Hands and Glass
The original and unrestored, beautifully elegant, cream/ivory Longines signed dial is showing some signs of patina. Considering the age of this watch (54 years old), it is still simply stunning and adds to its character!
The perfectly straight gilt hands and finely applied gilt hour batons and Arabic numeral quarter hour markers, provide a beautiful contrast against the dial. The dial is also signed "Longines, Flagship Automatic, Swiss". The lens has been replaced and therefore shows no signs of wear or scratching and the original lens can be sent to you with the watch as we have saved it!
The Movement is a high grade Longines Cal. 340 automatic. Our watchmaker has serviced it when the glass was replaced and it is running beautifully. It is also signed 'Longines Automatic', 'Swiss 17 Jewels' and has the movement number '1179xxxx' that dates the watch to the early 1960's.
The Flagship model of this era has particular historical significance because it contains the last entirely new automatic movement, calibre 340, to be designed and manufactured from the drawing board up, in house, by Longines itself.
To complete this delicious piece we have added a new, high quality, brown calf grain Hirsch strap with pin buckle, which we think is in keeping with the overall elegant appearance of this fine watch.
Box and Papers
There are no original papers or box with this watch, however the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct, dating the watch to circa 1961. A detailed invoice together with any warranty will be provided at the time of sale. As the original box is not available, we will supply the watch in our exclusive, genuine leather, VWS watchcase as listed here.
This Longines Flagship watch came to us from the original owner who purchased the watch new in about 1961 and it is therefore a one owner watch, which is quite a rarity these days! The watch is totally authentic and has not been machine polished or messed about with and therefore in fantastic original condition.
This is an absolutely beautiful piece and watches of this quality and condition are extremely rare and difficult to come by today and highly sought after and if history is any judge they will only increase in value as most that you see and will come across will have had the cases polished and the dials repainted.
We accept credit and debit card payments for all purchases through a secure server on our website or should you prefer, contact us on +44 (0) 7831 454658 to pay over the telephone.
This superb Longines watch is priced very competitively taking rarity and condition into consideration but we will still consider your watch as a part exchange even if your watch is of higher value! Please contact us to discuss this further.
