Lemania, founded in Switzerland in 1884 by Alfred Lugrin, has a storied history in the realm of horology, particularly with military watches. Initially celebrated for its chronograph movements, Lemania quickly became a key player in producing precise timepieces for militaries. During World War II, Lemania's robust and reliable designs caught the attention of various armed forces. Their watches were known for their durability and accuracy, essential traits for wartime conditions.

The "Dirty Dozen" military watches refer to a collection of timepieces commissioned by the British Ministry of Defence during World War II. In 1945, the MoD needed robust, reliable wristwatches for its servicemen, leading to specifications known as W.W.W. (Watch, Wristlet, Waterproof). Twelve Swiss manufacturers were contracted: Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, Omega, Record, Timor and Vertex.

These watches shared key features: highly legible black dials with luminescent hands and numerals; sturdy stainless steel cases; shatterproof crystal; and accurate mechanical movements. The reverse bore military markings including the Broad Arrow symbol denoting British government property.

Post-war surplus saw these timepieces enter civilian markets where they gained iconic status among collectors for their historical significance and craftsmanship. Today, a complete set of Dirty Dozen watches is highly prized in horological circles for its enduring legacy in military history and watchmaking excellence.

What's on Offer

We are delighted to be able to offer for sale this stunning and rare Lemania Dirty Dozen soldiers watch from the Second World War. We are always amazed to find these historic watches have survived so well for so many years and this is a particularly beautiful example.

The rich black dial bears all the hallmarks one would expect to see with bold Arabic numerals, a recessed sub-seconds dial at 6 o'clock and the military pheon, the painted arrow that denotes the watch as property of the MoD. The jewel in the crown of this watch though, is almost certainly the beautiful and original lume which has evenly across the dial to a stunning light pumpkin colour - the grail!

The dial is encapsulated underneath shatterproof Plexiglas and to the caseback you will note the original military markings are all in place. This is a gem of a find, these watches are dwindling in numbers especially in such exemplary condition, so if it's missing from your collection, snap it up! A joy for any military collector and a very worthy addition to any collection, we will be sad to see this one go!
