'JW' James Weir, Glasgow - Silver c.1915 - Wire Lugged - Officer's WW1 Trench Watch

Antique J. W. (James Weir) Military / World War I Silver Trench Watch. c. 1915. Serial no. 91114-2.

This stunning gents (or ladies) First World War Trench Watch, c.1915. was imported by renowned Glaswegian watch manufacturer, jeweller and silversmith, James Weir, who was also known for making chronometers for the Admiralty.

With premises at both Argyle Street and Buchanan Street, it’s likely that Weir imported the components of this large and imposing timepiece separately before housing them in an elegant silver casing, possibly of his own making.

Featuring a calibre 188 movement, the watch has an oversized black dial with large white Arabic numerals and cathedral hands. With sub-seconds dial positioned at 6 O’clock, the watch also features radium pips, placed at the five minute markers on the rail track ring along with perfectly matching radium inserts in the attractive cathedral style hands.

On the inside of the case back, the watch is hallmarked ‘S’ to place its year of origins as 1915 along with the opposed F’s (prone) that denote Glasgow as its place of manufacture/import and the serial number 9114-2.

This unique timepiece has a hinged case back and Swiss hand-winding movement that is working nicely.

What’s on offer:

This piece is sold with one of our specially manufactured leather travel pouches and will arrive fitted with your choice of black or brown 12mm leather straps.

The watch shows some signs of light wear, commensurate to its age (dated to 1915) but is in truly overall great condition for something over 100 years old now!

The Trench watch is being sold with a 6 month Vintage Watch Specialist guarantee.

There is a small mark (it looks more like black paint), in the centre of the dial with a faint line tracing to the number 10, which also looks like paint. This is barely noticeable in natural light and at most angles but we thought it best to mention it. We wonder if the dial was at some point marked at this spot and someone has painted over it in an attempt to repair the 'stain'!
