A Beautiful and Rare Vintage Jaeger LeCoultre Military Issued WWW ‘Dirty Dozen' World War II Soldier’s Wrist Watch. from c.1944.

In the closing years of World War II, a basic but carefully specified model wristwatch was commissioned to members of the British Armed Forces by the Ministry of Defence - manufactured by one of twelve watchmakers who delivered the pieces in 1944 and 1945. These manufacturers (Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, JLC, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor, and Vertex) later came to be known as ‘The Dirty Dozen’ in the mid-1960s, after the release of the popular war film of the same name.

These watches are now highly sought after by military watch collectors and enthusiasts alike, and we have been delighted to help a number of our clients complete full sets in recent years. Each watch was commissioned and manufactured with similar specifications and, as military issues, were hard-wearing, highly legible, and water-resistant with stainless steel or nickel-plated cases, shatterproof crystal, and fixed lug bars.

The famous Caliber 479 mechanical hand-wound movement powers this Jaeger watch, with 16-jewel movement, is well known for its reliability and good timekeeping. Unlike other WWW watches this movement was made specifically for the JLC military watches and therefore only around 10,000 were produced, of which 6000 went into the Dirty Dozens making them quite rare and hard to find in good working condition!

What’s on offer:

This piece is unpolished with slight signs of wear to the chrome topped case, however, these are commensurate with age. Caseback markings; 285779 WWW F 15125. The watch now runs extremely well, having just returned from having a complete service/overhaul by the well-known military watchmaker John Senior when a new mainspring was fitted, a replacement balance jewel was also fitted as the existing one was wrong! John also replaced a missing case clamp and screw and also replaced the sub-second-hand as an incorrect one had previously been fitted. So rest assured the watch is now as it should have been, with all original parts and running as one would expect.

The rich black dial is original to the watch and features original radium hour plots which have aged to a rather appealing buttery colour. The Arabic numerals and dished subdial are sharp and the original cathedral hands featuring luminous inserts have taken on a similar, even creamy hue. For us, this warm vintage character is what makes these watches so beautiful - this watch would have stories aplenty if it could speak and the ageing process is something to cherish, not polish away. Just like a fine wine, this watch will get even better as the years go by. A beautiful example that will bring much joy to the wearer.
