A rare British-Issued WWII Font ATP (Army Trade Pattern) watch, British Army military issue markings on the case back with 'Broad Arrow'

One of the elusive 'ATP' series, this Font has quite literally been through the wars, but lacks the scars to show for it. A precursor to the famous ‘Dirty Dozen’ watches, produced for the British Armed Forces during World War II by 12 world-famous watch manufacturers (hence the nickname), the ATP (Army Trade Pattern) series of watches was made available at the start of WWII via a Military of Defence contract with 17 Swiss suppliers in 1939. Amazingly, in an effort to demonstrate neutrality, the Swiss supplied almost identical watches, this time with black dials, to the German military.

Just over 133,000 ATP watches were produced during World War II, and while the watches were meant to have been destroyed as fighting drew to a close, many were decommissioned and some continued in service. Often, due to wartime budgets, the cases were coated in nickel and plated to cut corners. The Font, however, is made of a sturdy 31mm solid stainless steel case, and has consequently aged beautifully, with a pristine finish still visible all over the steel case. There are minor scratches (the watch was most likely worn during WWII), but these pale into insignificance when viewed alongside the stunning ageing process which has occurred elsewhere on the watch.

What’s On Offer

The Font ATP is a beautiful example of British Military timepiece history. The dial, originally a bright, sharp white, has taken on the vintage character that the watch now holds, fading to a warm, grey patina. The hands have taken on an even more eye-catching warmth, having aged into a deep pumpkin/orange tone. Wonderful to look at, especially given its rich military provenance.

The sub-seconds dial at 6:00 is gently sunk into the dial, creating an aesthetically appealing texture which stands out from the rest of the dial.

This watch is in excellent condition for its age and in full working order, sold with an adjustable brown leather strap which in itself has some vintage character and was likely fitted many years ago. We can also supply a new strap should you want!

This piece will be supplied with a VWS leather presentation pouch.
