A rare British-Issued WWII ATP (Army Trade Pattern) watch, British Army military issue markings on the case back with 'Broad Arrow'

One of the elusive 'ATP' series, this Cyma has quite literally been through the wars, but lacks the scars to show for it. A precursor to the famous ‘Dirty Dozen’ watches, produced for the British Armed Forces during World War II by 12 world-famous watch manufacturers (hence the nickname), the ATP (Army Trade Pattern) series of watches was made available at the start of WWII via a Military of Defence contract with 17 Swiss suppliers in 1939. Amazingly, in an effort to demonstrate neutrality, the Swiss supplied almost identical watches, this time with black dials, to the German military.

Just over 133,000 ATP watches were produced during World War II, and while the watches were meant to have been destroyed as fighting drew to a close, many were decommissioned and some continued in service. Often, due to wartime budgets, the cases were coated in nickel or plated with stainless steel to cut corners. The Cyma, however, is made of a sturdy 29mm solid stainless steel case, and has consequently aged beautifully, with a pristine factory polish still visible all over the steel. There are minor scratches (the watch was probably worn during WWII), but these pale in insignificance when viewed alongside the stunning ageing process which has occurred elsewhere on the watch.

The Cyma, known as the smallest of the ATPs at 29mm in case diameter, does not underwhelm. Featuring concentric, radial brushing around the sub-seconds dial, an ornate chapter ring around the dial hour batons, blue tempered steel hands and a stepped smooth steel bezel, the face is beautifully preserved and full of vintage character. As with many Cyma ATPs, the lume has fallen from the hour and minute hands, though this now looks to be intentional: the blue tempered steel stands out quite clearly against the creamy, tropical patinated dial.

The watch comes with an original, genuine Bonklip bracelet. These Bonklip bracelets are rarely seen nowadays, and command a premium when sold alone. This is a watch which looks the part, and is also historically accurate and original.
