Ray Mellor was a young man at the start of WW2, Working in Bristol docks whilst residing with relatives to escape the London blitz, he joined the merchant navy and served on the Queen Elizabeth troopship transporting thousands of troops from New York to Scotland during the battle of the Atlantic.
In the years following the war, he found employment at Hamilton UK where he eventually became managing director, developing the MoD side of the business and winning various government contracts for them.
Hamilton closed its doors in the very early 70s and Mellor embarked on founding his own company in 1972, naming it Cabot Watch Company, after driving past the tower built in, 1897 to commemorate John Cabot's famous voyage from Bristol and the continent of North America.
CWC has since manufactured watches for all branches of the British armed services. Their range included mechanical and quartz chronographs, divers watches, and general issue service watch's
The G10 dial was designed for simplicity and clarity and CWC supplied over 160,000 of them to the MOD for 26 years between 1980 and 2006.
The old logo was used for a couple of years and was changed to the oval logo in 1982. The early G10s were nicknamed Fatboy as the case was thicker than the current models in order to house larger movements. Here, the 1985 example offered for sale is a Fat Boy iteration and houses the ETA 555 movement. 1985 was the last year of production of this case variant of the G10.
What’s On Offer
At over 35 years old, this watch is in absolutely remarkable condition. The stark black dial looks tremendous against the contrast of the bold white Arabic numerals which are immaculate. The luminous indices have also survived well and are an attractive vanilla hue as is the lume on the pencil hands. A needle central seconds hand, CWC signature, and Tritium emblem complete the dial which is encapsulated underneath robust plexiglass and encased in stainless steel. The case back is engraved: 0552/6645-99 5415317 6672 85. The case is also in fine fettle with only minor signs of general wear. An iconic reference with military significance, a fantastic addition to any collection.
