Revue 'ATP' Cal. 57 - c.1938 WWII-Issued British Military Watch - Tropical Dial

£625.00GBP
vws1449cs

A rare British-Issued WWII ATP (Army Trade Pattern) watch on a vintage leather strap, British Army military issue markings on the case back with 'Broad Arrow'

One of the elusive 'ATP' series, this Revue has quite literally been through the wars, but lacks the scars to show for it. A precursor to the famous ‘Dirty Dozen’ watches, produced for the British Armed Forces during World War II by 12 world-famous watch manufacturers (hence the nickname). The ATP (Army Trade Pattern) series of watches was made available at the start of WWII via a Military of Defence contract with 17 Swiss suppliers in 1939 (amazingly, in an effort to demonstrate neutrality, the Swiss supplied almost identical watches, this time with black dials, to the Germany military).

Just over 133,000 ATP watches were produced during World War II, and while the watches were meant to have been destroyed as fighting drew to a close, many were decommissioned and some continued in service. Bearing this in mind, it's rare that such a watch would survive in a condition like this with all of the original parts. Its 31mm sturdy military nickel chrome-plated case houses a 15 jewel Revue Caliber 57 movement which has recently received a service from our expert watchmaker. There is another variant of this ATP- the Cal. 59 Revue ATP, which predictably has a different caliber movement. This is the only difference between the two, but in collectors' eyes it's an important distinction to make.

The dial is definitely a favourite for us with this Revue ATP. The dial has turned a beautiful and evenly-distributed tropical tone across the face and the hands a beautiful dark tobacco colour, all highlighted by the tracking ring and Arabic numerals. A sub-seconds register at 6:00 helps balance the dial, featuring subtle radial brushing to add a new texture to the face.

What’s On Offer

This watch is in excellent condition for its age and in full working order, sold on a vintage leather strap which in itself has some age and was likely fitted many years ago. We can also supply a new strap should you want!

The original radium dial and hands have aged to an unusual and eye catching tropical/tobacco coloured patina.

This piece will be supplied with a VWS leather presentation pouch.
