Bentima Star - Ladies 9k Gold Cocktail Watch - c.1950s

Bentima Star 9k Yellow Gold Vintage Cocktail Watch - Elegant and Sophisticated -  Flexifix Style Rolled Gold Bracelet - c.1950s

Almost as long as there have been wristwatches, there have been cocktail watches. First created by Tiffany & Co just after the turn of the 20th Century, the discreet proportions of the cocktail watch were a purposeful part of the design - women were not expected to be particularly concerned with things such as time and it could be deemed unladylike, and even a serious faux pas to be seen checking ones watch. With this in mind, cocktail watches were crafted from precious metals in the main and boasted ornate designs which could be easily mistaken for a bracelet allowing ladies to look glamourous whilst being able to keep a discreet eye on the time. Sneaky! lol

What’s On Offer

An elegant gold timepiece with beautifully slight proportions synonymous with cocktail watch design. The beveling on the bezel offers an unusual aesthetic creating the illusion of a square whilst the case and dial are clearly circular. The dial is a charming Champagne tone with applied gilt Arabic numerals which have remained delightfully intact. The Bentina Star and Swiss Made signatures are also clear and the gold sword hands are a graceful finale to a timepiece that was possibly worn to all manner of formal occasions.

The dial does have some light blemishes and a faint peppering of pleasing patina. This is nothing untoward on a watch of this vintage and only adds to its charm. The rolled gold and stainless steel 'Flexifix' style bracelet completes the piece. A truly charming watch with a million stories to tell I would think...
