Omega Constellation 'Pie Pan', Automatic (Cal.551) Chronometer from 1961 (date engraved on case back)

The Constellation was released in 1952 and was named in honour of the Constellation jet that flew during World War 2. Available in steel, yellow gold and rose gold as well as three grades of finishing (Standard, Deluxe and Grand Luxe), the Constellation was Omega's flagship watch from the very beginning. One of the things that make the Constellation stand out from the other Omega families of that time, is that the dials on these Constellation models were richly decorated. The use of gold dials, gold hour markers, onyx hour markers, gold hands and gold applied logos and wording is something that wasn’t seen on any of their other collections to this extent. Some of the gold dials had a satin-brushed finish, others had a sun-guilloche pattern or a cross-hatched dial. There were many different dials available for the Omega Constellation in the 1950s and 1960s.

The watch on offer here is date engraved 28/11/1961 which puts this watch right in the middle of when some of the most desirable Constellations were produced. Another thing that makes the Constellations attractive to a lot of collectors are those nice fancy 'dog leg' lugs. Those early Omega Constellations have rounded lugs and were later restyled in the 1960s. A bit more rectangular, sharp edges and still very elegant. Often at the time compared to the Rolex Day Date due to the Constellations presence at the top of Omega’s luxury product line, it is interesting to know that a full gold vintage Omega Constellation with gold bracelet was a bit more expensive in those days than the Rolex Day-Date!

What's on offer

The steel case on the watch available is a true delight. The 'dog leg' lugs draw the eye due to their interesting shape and design whist the signature Pie Pan dial exudes a wonderful patina. Beating inside the stainless steel case is the Cal. 551 automatic movement which is a well-respected workhorse of a movement from Omega. This model is a very universal watch for many a different occasion, whether dressed in black tie or in a pair of jeans or with shirt and jumper, this watch works!
