Omega released the Chronostop in 1966. Originally intended to be part of the Seamaster collection, the Chronostop was transferred to the Geneve collection in 1967 as a lower-priced chronograph watch for younger buyers. Despite the low price, the Chronostop was a premium model. The watch’s movement seemed simple, but it was a high-accuracy, high-beat, high-quality engine, essentially a simpler version of the movement that powered the Speedmaster. The cal.865 movement was introduced in 1966 and Omega used that model for 124,000 Chronostops. The cal.920 movement appeared in 1968 and was used for 61,000 watches. The model won the 1967 Honour Prize for “Chronographs and Sport Watches” in the competition sponsored by the Swiss Watchmaking Federation to boost creativity. The Chronostop also took the first prize for Industrial Aesthetics at the Utrecht Spring Fair in 1968. It was selected as the official Omega timer at the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg and the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.

What’s On Offer

The watch on offer here is a c.1969 reference 146.009-146.010 featuring the calibre 920 and what a fine example this one is. With its slate grey coloured dial and flashes of colour with the orange chronograph/seconds hand it makes for a really interesting dial and general aesthetic. Further enhanced with the 'chequered flag' style outer minute track on the dial, it really draws the eye in and gives this watch that added sporty feel. An added benefit is the tritium lume on the hands and just above the baton indices which gives the watch legibility in dark environments. Something you don’t see often is the crown at 4 o’clock but on this watch it looks great teamed with the chronograph pump pusher at 2 o’clock balancing the look out wonderfully.

The condition of this watch is original and excellent. Very few marks to indicate it’s even graced a wrist before and we are guessing its not ever had the case polished so still retains the sunburst brushed finish to the bezel part of the case and all of its clean sharp edges! The dial remains sharp, sporty and free from any wear or blemishes also. The shape of the case is interesting and different and further channels the watches sporting background and wears very nicely.

Recently serviced so expect it to run well and we will also give it a 12 month VWS guarantee for your piece of mind.

Once upon a time only a few years ago these watches were a staple seller for us and we would have a few in stock at any given time but this is the first one we have thought nice enough and found at a reasonable enough price to offer you for sale as they seem to have shot up in price and have also become harder to find, (certainly in this sort of condition) so hopefully this won't be hanging around for long!
