Smiths Everest - Caliber 0104 Mechanical Wristwatch - c.1960s - Supplied with Original Box
A Charming Vintage Smiths Everest, c.1960s, in Fantastic Pre-Owned Condition and Sold with its Original Smiths Box.
Today Smiths Group is an engineering giant, but their watch division, the last English watchmakers, closed in the late seventies. It wasn’t always that way. In the fifties, Smiths’ Watches, Clocks and Instruments, were ubiquitous and it is no surprise that Smiths were quick to support a patriotic enterprise like the ascent of Everest. In fact, the quote below is from an advert placed in The Times by Smiths directly after the successful summit mission in 1953.
"Smiths watches, Smiths instruments and Smiths travel alarms, were chosen by the gallant Everest team by virtue of their proven reputation for dependability and durability."
Little surprise then, that Smiths chose to name a line of watches after the world's highest and most infamous peak.
What’s On Offer
A very charming vintage Smiths Everest is on offer here, with a beautiful blemish-free ivory dial, boasting Dauphine hands, applied hour markers and quarter Arabic numerals. The watch is in fine vintage condition, its stainless steel case looks well with only minor signs of wear - it is engraved on the caseback as it was originally given as a presentation watch to a member of staff at Bull's Metal & Marine Ltd, for 25 years service, so it has clearly been a treasured gift and taken care of. At 34mm, it is a mid-size watch, however, it wears larger on the wrist due to its slim bezel with larger dial. A stylish vintage watch with bags of character, comfortable on the wrist and ideal for an everyday wearer, it also comes with its original vintage Smiths box.
