Omega Constellation F300 Electronic Day/Date c.1970s - Retro Chic and very collectible - Ref: 198.0039.170 - Cal: 1260 (ESA 9164)

The history of the Constellation line is very rich, it's one of Omega's oldest collections. The name stems from Omegas chronometer observatory based testing. Observatory testing typically lasted for one to two months and contained accuracy tests that were possibly more taxing than modern-day methods.

Still, part of the Omega lineup today, the Constellation remains the pinnacle of the Omega dress watch collection with many grand and prestigious models having been released and enjoyed since the models' inception in 1952.

Like many other watch manufacturers in the 1970s, Omega employed the ESA 9162 (date only) and ESA 9164 (day and date) tuning fork movements in many of their watches. These movements are often considered the “Rolls Royce” of tuning fork movements. They were designed by Max Hetzel, who had previously worked for Bulova. Men’s and women’s Constellations of the 1950s to the 1970s are becoming increasingly sought-after by collectors.

What’s On Offer

This watch is the epitome of retro-cool with its funky square case and inset round dial with bevelled bezel. The dial is a beautiful brushed satin silver colour with a subtle sunburst in the right light. The applied hour markers are in fine condition as is the applied Omega emblem at 12 o'clock and signature at 6 o'clock. The day/date window at 3 o'clock is crisp and the graceful hands are sharp along with the needle seconds hand. The watch also sports the characteristic observatory emblem on the caseback, synonymous with the Constellation family.

The watch boasts substantial proportions and even with its rather unusual case shape, it wears beautifully and compares favorably with any modern-day counterpart. The case shows minor signs of wear, however, nothing remarkable given the age of the watch. The dial and its assets are in fine fettle and it is keeping good time, as you would expect from any electronic watch, making for a fine watch with a prestigious bloodline. This would make a great addition to any collection. Snap it up!
