Well-preserved c.1916-1917 Swiss WW1 Silver Officer's Trench Watch in an oversized case on wire lugs. Assayed .925 Sterling Silver London 1916-1917.

Likely an officer's trench watch from The Great War, this wire-lugged gem defies decades in its current condition. It features wonderful cathedral hands with the entire lume intact, a ceramic dial with a stunning set of chunky Arabic numerals with a red '12', and a beautiful chapter ring which cuts through the small seconds sub-register at 6:00.

The roomy fixed wire lugs, an added security step for the harsh wartime conditions of Northern France and Belgium, allow the watch to be worn on a wider military 'bund' or NATO strap, the former photographed here.

Having closely inspected the hallmarks, we can confidently say that this watch was imported into the UK by 'GS', which denotes Stockwell & Company, a British Assay Agent who were founded after a British law change in 1907 required all imported silver wristwatches to receive British hallmarks upon arrival. Many companies, Stockwell included, set up shop to provide an assaying service where Swiss watchmakers could not from so far away. The 'U' and cross in the case back denotes a London-registered watch, and the 'A' that the watch received its hallmark between 1916 & 1917. It is solid .925 Sterling silver.

The watch's overall condition, as the photos testify, is excellent. The case still bears its original shine, the glass is largely unscathed and the lightly ridged bezel is still sharp. There are some faintly hand etched initials on the case back and what looks like a tiny solder repair to the edge of the case back!
